Wow, it’s another Go Blue Michigan Football History Game Day – Michigan vs Western Michigan. Today’s game is seventh time that the Wolverines and Broncos have met on the football field. So, far the Maize and Blue footballers are perfect against the Broncos with a record of 6 wins and 0 losses. We will talk more about that in a minute.

First, we will take a closer look at what has happened on this day in Michigan Football History. Then I will give you some of the history on how our beloved Wolverines have done so well against Western Michigan University and what the prospect for victory are this year.

Calendar History:

The University of Michigan has played a total of five games on the eighth day of September. So far, the results have been pretty good, especially when they play in The Big House.

Some Outstanding Wolverine Performances on September 8th:

  • 2007 – Mike Hart gained 127-yards on 25 carries against Oregon, but it isn’t enough!

Michigan vs Western Michigan Series History:

The Western Michigan Broncos, make their seventh appearance in Ann Arbor today! Like I said in the introduction, Michigan is undefeated against the Broncos – winning the first six games. History is definitely on Michigan’s side when they play the Western Michigan Broncos.

Yes, the history and the odds are definitely on Michigan’s side today against the Broncos. So far, the average score of a game involving these two teams is 35.3 to 13.1 in favor of Michigan. The Wolverines are 25 ½ point favorites and it could get very ugly since the angry Michigan Men want to “send a message” today.

Best Wolverine Performances – Michigan vs Western Michigan 1943-2011:

I found a number of notable Michigan Man performances against the Broncos. Check them out:

  • September 25, 1943 – Elroy Hirsch and Bob Nussbaumer scored two touchdowns each in the romp over the Broncos. Fullback Bill Daley also scored on a 65-yard run. Merv Pregulman kicked seven of eight extra points.
  • September 22, 2001 – Fullback B. J. Askew rambled for 112-yards on 15 carries and Marquise Walker gained 108 yards on 6 receptions.
  • September 7, 2002 – John Navarre threw three touchdown passes and Chris Perry gained 118-yards on 17 carries.
  • September 5, 2009 – Tate Forcier threw three touchdown passes (2-Junior Hemingway and 1 Kevin Koger) and Denard Robinson fumbled the ball on his first carry and then sped 43-yards to the end zone for the first of many special “Denard” moments! (Thanks to Bigtime 261 for this excellent You Tube post!)

  • September 3, 2011 – Fitzgerald Toussaint scored touchdowns on a pair of short runs. Michael Shaw crossed the goal-line after a 44-yard run. Linebacker Brandon Herron stole the show with two defensive touchdowns. He put the Wolverines up 14-7 with a 94-yard “pick-six” in the second quarter. Herron scored his second touchdown on a 29-yard fumble recovery/return – making him the first defender to score two touchdowns in the same game.

Today:

Both teams have a record of 0 wins and 1 loss heading into today’s game. Of course, Michigan lost at Notre Dame by a score of 17-24. Meanwhile, Western Michigan lost a shootout to Syracuse (42-55).

Second year coach Tim Lester is trying to build a winning program at his alma mater, just like Jim Harbaugh. Both teams need a win today, but only one will leave the field as the victor today.

The Broncos will be as prepared as they can be, but #21 Michigan is just too good at every position. Jim Harbaugh is in the fourth year of his tenure. Despite a record of 9 wins and 9 losses in his last 18 games, I still believe Coach Harbaugh has Michigan heading in the right direction. Michigan has a BIG  advantage in talent and I have to give the “Coaching” edge to Coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff as well. It will be a long day for Western Michigan in Ann Arbor today!

My Prediction:

Michigan wins this game and they win BIG! Michigan will score a lot of points against the porous Bronco defense. I know for certain that WMU will not score 42 points against the Wolverine defense. Personally, I think it will be one of the biggest blowout wins for Michigan in this series. I look for the final score to be 52-10. Victory number one for the 2018 season should be in the books around 3:00 pm, EST on Saturday. Program win # 944 should be “history” as well. Go Blue!
