Game Day! September 10, 2016

Posted on September 10, 2016 by Barry Gallagher

Michigan is off to a very strong start in season number one-hundred thirty-seven. Okay, they have only played one game and Hawaii just wasn’t up to the task of competing with the seventh ranked Wolverines. Now, the fifth ranked and heavily favored Wolverines (35 points?) play host to another team that they should defeat easily. But, we still have to play the game, don’t we? Wolverine fans know that the “easy” wins don’t always happen as they should.

Once again, our game day focus will be on what has already happened on this date and what has happened in the series between Michigan and today’s opponent, the University of Central Florida.

Michigan has played a total of six games on the tenth day in September. This date has been pretty good to the Wolverines since they have compiled a record of 4 wins, 2 losses and 0 ties so far. The first game that Michigan ever played on this date was a conference game at Illinois in 1977. The Wolverines won that contest by a score of 37-9 over the Fighting Illini.

Michigan also hosted Washington State in a non-conference game in 1983 and won that contest by a score of 20-17.

The remaining four games on this date have all been played against Notre Dame. Three of those games were played in South Bend where Michigan posted a record of 1 win and 2 losses. The last game that Michigan played on this date was September 10, 2011. Of course, that was the first night game in the history of Michigan Stadium and the Wolverines won a thriller. Final Score: Michigan 35  Notre Dame 31. That game is still one of my favorite Michigan wins of all-time! Check out the video below of the last few minutes of this amazing game!

Here is a quick “history” of the games that Michigan has played on September 10th and the results:

Game # 1 – September 10, 1977 @ Memorial Stadium, Score: Michigan 37 Illinois 9

Game # 2 – September 10, 1983 @ Michigan Stadium,  Score: Michigan 20 Washington State Univ. 17

Game # 3 – September 10, 1988 @ South Bend, Score: Michigan 17 Notre Dame 19

Game # 4 – September 10, 1994 @ South Bend, Score: Michigan 26 Notre Dame 24

Game # 5 – September 10, 2005 @ South Bend, Score: Michigan 10 Notre Dame 17

Game # 6 – September 10, 2011 @Michigan Stadium, Score: Michigan 35 Notre Dame 31

Today’s opponent, the Knights of the University of Central Florida, will be making their first appearance ever on a Michigan schedule. These programs are pretty far apart in terms of their “college football lore,” but let’s look at some comparisons.

Description UM UCF
First Year of College Football 1879 1979
Number of football seasons 137 47
Number of total wins 926 226

Okay, you get the picture there is a huge difference between the history and accomplishments of these programs. However, I guarantee you that UCF will show up and give it their best shot. This team runs a “speed spread” so they will test the Michigan defense like other spread teams have in the past. The Knights ran 91 plays on offense last week and put up some good numbers. Hopefully, Don Brown and his coaches and players have the means and the will to shut Central Florida down and send them back to Florida with their heads spinning!

The Knights won their first game of the 2016 season over South Carolina State last week by a score of 38-0. They dominated both sides of the ball and rolled up almost five hundred yards of offense (462 to be exact). Look for things to be a little different today against the Wolverines – a lot different!
