Today marks another notable day in Wolverine Football History because it marks the 87th anniversary of the first Michigan vs Central Michigan football game. On this day in 1931, Harry Kipke’s Wolverines hosted a team from Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Yes, the Crimson and Gold footballers from Central State Teachers College (CSTC) came all the way to Ann Arbor to play some football. As it turned out, Michigan played a lot better. Final Score: Michigan 27 CTSU 0. Kipke’s team would go on to a successful season (8-1-1) and a second consecutive conference championship.
Michigan did not play a team from Mount Pleasant during the next seventy-two seasons. Both teams got on the same field again in 2003. Central Michigan State Teachers College became Central Michigan University in 1959, but not much else had changed. Okay, Michigan had a different coach and so did Central Michigan. However, the result was pretty much the same. Lloyd Carr’s fourth-ranked Wolverines hammered the Chips by a score of 45-7.
Michigan didn’t wait so long between games the next time. Central Michigan came to Ann Arbor again on September 9, 2006. Once again, Carr’s tenth ranked footballers, showed Central Michigan the difference between Mid-American conference football and Big Ten football. Final score: Michigan 41 CMU 17.
The last edition of the Michigan vs Central Michigan series took place on August 31, 2013. It was year three of the Brady Hoke Era. At this point, every game was important to Brady and his team. After his stellar start (11-2) in 2011, the Wolverines slipped to eight wins and five losses in 2012. This was the first game of the 2013 season and Brady’s footballers took care of business. The Wolverines defeated the Chippewas by a score of 59-9. The fifty-point victory margin was the largest margin so far in the brief four game series. Unfortunately, Brady’s team went 6-6 the rest of the way to finish at 7-6 for the year. The pressure was on in 2014 and we all know what happened.
So, although the Michigan vs Central Michigan series is not a big rivalry game, it still plays a role in the history of Michigan Football. The absolute soonest time that the series could resume is 2022. As of this writing, there are three open slots on the 2022 schedule.
